Starting a revolution
In 1775, a large star-shaped fort in northeastern New York state became the site of the first victory for the Americans in the Revolutionary War. And some famous names were involved in the surprise attack on an unsuspecting British garrison.
Due to its location on Lake Champlain, Fort Ticonderoga in northeastern New York state provided critical access to Canada during the French and Indian War. However, it was also just across the lake from Vermont where, almost 20 years later, a local militia, the Green Mountain Boys, joined the effort to gain American independence.
At dawn on May 10, 1775, 100 militiamen commanded by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold crossed the lake and captured the British soldiers who were sleeping on the job rather than guarding the Fort. The rebel victory was definitely a confidence builder. The Green Mountain Boys rounded up the Fort’s artillery, which they provided to the Continental Army as the Revolution began to swing into high gear.
A historic landmark
As a National Historic Landmark, Fort Ticonderoga is open Tuesdays through Sundays from May through October for tours, exhibits and programs. From watching weapons demonstrations and battle reenactments to meeting large animals like oxen and exploring the museum collections, there is much to see and do at the Fort. During the winter months, visitors can attend scheduled seminars and other events. For example, this November you can participate in a two-day workshop to build your own regimental coat!
Where to stay
A trip to the Adirondacks is a treat for the eyes at almost any time of year and many lodging choices are located in picturesque areas. You might like to stay on Lake George at the Trout house Village Resort in Hague, NY. There are boats, kayaks and canoes available, and from here it’s about a 10-minute drive to Fort Ticonderoga.
If your family happens to include a student bound for Middlebury College, consider a stay at the Middlebury Inn, listed among The Historic Hotels of America. The college is just over a mile away and from there the Fort is about a 40-minute drive.
Where to eat
After a busy morning exploring the Fort, you and your family can refuel with lunch onsite at America’s Fort Café. And for Adirondack style, try the Burgoyne Grill in the Best Western Plus, Ticonderoga. Here you’ll find a little of everything from chicken wings and burgers to steak and scallops. If you’re staying at the Middlebury Inn, you can take advantage of onsite dining at Morgan’s Tavern, a local favorite. The menu here runs the gamut from sandwiches and salads to gnocchi and baby back ribs.
